Scientific Metaphysics

Part 12 of 12 in the series Spiritual History

“Once men thought Spirit divine, and Matter devilish. Now science and philosophy recognize the parallelism, the approximation, the unity of the two: how each reflects the other as face answers to face in a glass, nay, how the laws of both are one, or how one is the realization. We are learning not to fear truth.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803-1882

Historically, the idea of a science that deals with the non-physical was considered implausible.

How can you measure it to apply scientific approach and principles?

However what we are seeing in the last 50 years is that science is becoming more aware of the influence of non-measurable experience and thought over matter, while at the same time human knowledge is increasingly respectful of scientific methods.

The quest for a universal philosophy that incorporates both science and metaphysics, a Unified Theory of Everything, is more hopeful now.

Why?

Because both these streams of awareness and knowledge are being more respectful.

This is largely due to advances in understanding of time and space, and the now compelling evidence that thought affects matter, or indeed may be what is behind matter. (See also Quantum Theory page)

For example, in theoretical physics, quantum nonlocality refers to the phenomenon by which sub-atomic particles contradict classical scientific theory and appear in two places at once, or emulate identical behavior over a large distance. An example is Bell’s theorem, which has been verified by experiment.

In 2017 some Chinese physicists at the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai were able to produce entangled photons on a satellite orbiting 300 miles above the planet and beam the particles to two different ground-based labs that were 750 miles apart, all without losing the particles’ faster than light speed relationship. Does this sound woo-woo to you? That particles can emulate patterns across such distance in an almost instantaneous manner? Well emerging research shows that entangled particles could help build a “quantum internet,” give rise to new kinds of coding, and allow for faster-than-light communication.

It also raises the possibility that internal thought photons could one day be found to interrelate with others in another human mind, what we today call metaphysical intuition, the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.

If this were so, then thought transference would be scientifically viable, even though difficult to prove.

Such knowledge raises human awareness of the vast areas of consciousness and knowledge that we are yet to discover.

It also allows us to consider the possibility that the divine soul consciousness, or God-mind, could be the pre-universal energy from which the Big Bang was initiated, and that each human Xconscious well is filled with the same energy, connected instantly through entanglement.

Study being done currently in Moscow gives an early indication that the soul, or the life energy that exists in each life-form, could also be mathematically associated with the previously unaccounted for energy of dark matter. In other words, our souls could also be shown to be a form of energy that is present in the matter of our bodies while we are alive, but still exist in space after our bodies die.

The scientific framework has given humanity much, and we need to respect it. However the metaphysical areas of belief and intuition may turn out to be another aspect unveiled by science, and we should also respect that possibility. We don’t have to lose hope that science and belief can be integrated, as there is much progress in this area in the 21st Century.

What do you think about science and metaphysics?

“A science that does not incorporate spirituality is dehumanizing;

a spirituality that does not include science is delusional.”

Dr David MacQuarrie
