Although Polytheism is a word that comes from the Greek Polus (many) theos (god) each god is usually a way of identifying a human need or or understanding, and most polytheistic religions still conceive of all gods conforming to an overarching spiritual force or primary god (‘Brahman’ in Hinduism).

Subgroups of polytheism are religions such as Hinduism, Han Folk or Chinese Traditional Religion, Shintoism and Taoism. Believers account for about 17% of the world’s population.
